In this article: Export Audio instructions and alternate USB Export instructions
Occasionally, you might need to export a copy of your interview audio from the StoryCorps App. This can happen for a number of reasons:
- You want to save or backup a copy of an interview draft recorded with the StoryCorps App but do not want to publish it to archive.storycorps.org.
- You cannot locate a copy of your interview audio in the App.
- You are having issues publishing your interview using the App and would like to explore our alternate upload method.
- You have encountered issues playing your interview audio in the App.
You can export your interview audio from the StoryCorps App using the in-app Export Audio feature or by exporting the audio to a computer via USB cable.
Please note: In most situations, we recommend using the in-app Export Audio feature before attempting to export your audio to a computer via USB cable. |
To export interview audio using the in-app Export Audio feature:
- Click the person 👤 icon in the bottom right corner to navigate to your profile page in the App.
- Scroll to the bottom of the page to confirm you are running version 6.0.13 or later of the StoryCorps App
If NOT, then navigate to your device's App store to search for 'StoryCorps' and press 'Update' to get the latest version of the StoryCorps App. - If you are running on version 6.0.13 or later, then at the bottom of your profile page select Technical Support.
- Select the red Export Audio option at the top of the technical support menu and choose which audio file you want to export from the app to your device.
- Once you've exported your audio, the location of your file will vary depending on what kind of device you are using:
- For iPhones and iOS Devices: You can access your audio via the Files app. To find your audio, select the Browse tab and review the files located on your device. All exported audio should be saved in a folder labeled StoryCorps.
- For Android devices: You can access the exported audio files via the Files app under the Audio category.
To export interview audio to a computer via USB cable
The steps you need to take to export your interview audio via USB cable will depend on what kind of computer you are using (Apple or PC) and what kind of mobile device you are using (iOS or Android.)
- To export interview audio from an iOS device using an Apple computer
- To export interview audio from an iOS device using a Windows PC
- To export interview audio from an Android device using an Apple computer
- To export interview audio from an Android device using a Windows PC
To export interview audio from an iOS device using an Apple computer:
- Plug your iOS device into your computer.
- Open the Finder window on your Apple computer located in your menu bar. If you cannot locate Finder search for it using the search icon
- On the left-hand, side menu of your Finder scroll to the Locations section and select your device
- Select Files to see all of the apps on your device with accessible files.
- Select StoryCorps from the list to see all accessible files associated with the StoryCorps App on your device.
- Please note: You cannot access the contents of folders saved to the StoryCorps App in Finder. You'll only be able to access the contents of these folders after you've exported the folder from the app to your computer.
- To export any app files to your computer, simply drag and drop the files you want to save onto your computer's desktop.
- Once you have exported the files to your computer, you'll be able to review any of the audio you have downloaded.
To export interview audio from an iOS device using a Windows PC:
- Plug your iOS device into your computer using a USB cable
- Launch iTunes on your computer
- Select the iPhone image on the upper left side of the screen
- Select Apps on the left, and scroll down to the bottom of the page to File Sharing to see a list of all file-sharing apps on your device.
- Select the StoryCorps App. The StoryCorps documents saved to your iPhone will be listed on the right side of the screen.
- Please note: Audio files will be listed with the extension .wav and the date and time of the recording.
- Select the audio file(s) you would like to save to your computer.
- In the lower right corner, a Save to button will appear that you can use to save the audio file to a specific location on your computer (or you can simply drag and drop the files onto your computer desktop.)
- Once you have exported the files to your computer, you'll be able to review any of the audio you have downloaded.
To export interview audio from an Android device using an Apple computer:
- If you haven't already, download and Install Android File Transfer on your Apple Computer
- Unlock your Android device and plug it into your computer using a USB cable.
- Once the cable has been connected, open Android File Transfer (if you have used Android File Transfer before, it may open automatically.)
- If prompted to do so by Android File Transfer, select the Charging this device via USB notification on your device and under Use USB for select File Transfer
- Scroll down to your list of files and folders. Depending on your Android, the file may appear in “root,” “sd card," or as a free-floating file with a file extension of .amr and the date and time of the recording.
- Select the audio file you wish to download, and save to your computer by clicking and dragging the file. You can then save the audio file to a specific location on your computer.
To export interview audio from an Android device using a Windows PC:
- Unlock your Android device and plug it into your computer using a USB cable.
- Select the Charging this device via USB notification on your device and under Use USB for select File Transfer
- Scroll down to your list of files and folders. Depending on your Android, the file may appear in “root,” “sd card," or as a free-floating file with a file extension of .amr and the date and time of the recording.
- Select the audio file you wish to download, and save to your computer by clicking and dragging the file. You can then save the audio file to a specific location on your computer.
Please note: After you export a copy of your interview audio from the StoryCorps App, you can manually publish the interview to archive.storycorps.org. |
