We strive to ensure that our content, programs, and services are accessible to people of all backgrounds, languages, and abilities. Related to this work, StoryCorps creates captions and includes transcripts on our website for produced content.
Here’s are a few examples about how we use captions and transcripts across our work:
-
Website: Produced StoryCorps content on our storycorps.org has accompanying transcripts for stories. Our Online Archive which is home to full interviews completed by StoryCorps staff via our Signature interviews includes transcripts, whereas, our user-generated interviews completed via our App or StoryCorps Connect may not have captions.
- Social Media: StoryCorps strives to utilize all closed captioning features offered by each social media channel. It is important to note that certain channels offer more advanced captioning features than others. Depending on the content being shared, we:
- Facebook: Enable auto-generated captions, upload SRT files with accurate closed captions, or publish content with accurate open captions.
-
Instagram: Enable auto-generated captions, publish content with accurate open captions, or direct users to visit our website to watch or listen to our content with accurate closed captions and transcripts. For help turning on the caption feature on Instagram, we'd recommend using these instructions from Meta linked here.
- TikTok: Enable auto-generated captions or publish content with accurate open captions.
- YouTube: Enable auto-generated captions or upload SRT files with accurate closed captions.
- X: Upload SRT files with accurate closed captions.
-
Threads: Publish content with accurate open captions or direct users to visit our website to watch or listen to our content with accurate closed captions and transcripts.
-
Public Television Animations: StoryCorps does provide captions for all our animations that are aired on PBS and local public television stations, which are typically broadcast by stations on their channels and the digital platforms they manage. There may be instances where these captions are not implemented.
- Partners and content licensing partners: There are many partners and organizations who may also collaborate with us and repost our audio stories, animations and videos. As an organization, we provide guidance to those organizations around best practices for posting accessible content, but we cannot always guarantee their adherence.
